The Korean drama fever has been taking more and more countries by storm. An example is the 2016 drama series, Descendants of the Sun, which was viewed by more than a billion times and still counting. The drama was translated into 32 different languages. It has become so popular to the point that tourists had been flocking Zakinthos, one of the Ionian islands in Greece just to see the drama location site.
A typical Korean drama has about 16-20 episodes. It is long enough to have a strong buildup of characters and the story yet short enough not be dragging. Despite the time needed to finish one drama, it seems that the Korean drama craze is showing no signs of slowing down.
So, whether you are an addict or a novice in K-drama, if you are going to spend 16-20 hours of your life in watching, it would be better to watch something that would give you lessons that you can apply in real life. Do take note that K-dramas are always infused with so many things. In addition, their culture is imbedded in the story so, you will also get to learn and understand the Korean culture.
We have come up with a list of Top Korean dramas to watch in no particular order.
1. Remember: War of the Son
Starring: Park Min Young and Yoo Seung -ho
Remember: War of the Son is a courtroom drama. Seung-ho’s father was wrongly accused and he does his best to have his father acquitted by becoming a lawyer and defending him. It teaches us about filial love and how far a child is willing to suffer in order to protect his father.
2. Bachelor’s Vegetable Store
Starring: Ji Chang Wook and Wang Ji-hye.
This kdrama is based on the life of a young man named Lee Young-seok whose hard work and effort turned his small vegetable store into a huge nationwide franchise all over Korea.
3. Brilliant Legacy / Shining Inheritance
Starring: Lee Seung-gi and Han Hyo-joo
The story tells us about love for family and how we ought to value the legacy that our elders have entrusted upon us.
4. Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim
Starring: Han Suk-kyu, Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin
This drama teaches us to pursue our dreams earnestly and not to be blindsided by what’s easy. It also imparts the value of integrity in the medical field.
5. Dream High
Starring: Kim Soo-hyun, Bae Suzy and Ok Taec-yeon
This teenage,coming of age drama is a must for music lovers as they will find the characters singing within the drama. The drama tells us that no one should tell us that our dreams are not important. If we work hard to reach our goals,then we can surely make it happen.
6. King 2 Hearts
Starring: Lee Seung-gi and Ha Ji-won
King 2 Hearts is a drama that came to mind when we recently witnessed the historical event of the North meeting the South. This drama shows us how boundaries can be broken by love and above all, it teaches us how a true leader is made. It also shows the importance of loyalty, sacrifice and honor.
7. Go Back Couple
Starring: Son Ho-jun and Jang Na-ra
This romantic-comedy series tells us simply how one must not easily give up on relationships simply because times are hard. We must always remember that our decisions will always impact our lives as well as the people we love. The mother-daughter angle also teaches us not to waste time and whatever we can do and whatever we need to say to them, we must do so while we can so as not to have any regrets.
8. Secret Garden
Starring: Ha Ji-won and Hyun bin
This drama tells us simply that true love always wins. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, if two people are destined to be with each other, they will find a way.
Starring: Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun.
This Korean drama swept the hearts of many around the world because it is more than your typical love story. The drama will make you want to think deeper about life, about the existence of God or a higher being and about free will. It shows how life on earth is temporary. Most of all, the drama shows that love has no boundaries. True love will find its way, no matter what.
Starring: Park Shin Hye and Lee Jung Sok
This drama teaches us to be brave to expose the truth and face the consequences of our actions.
11. The Moon Embracing the Sun
Starring: Kim Soo-hyun and Han Ga-in
This is a historical-fantasy drama about the love of the king for a shaman and how he was able to conquer the odds he had to deal with. It tells us the making of a brilliant king or leader.
